TAMBOPATA - MACAW CLAY LICK & SANDOVAL LAKE (4 Days / 3 Nights)

Reception at the airport or bus terminal and transfer to the Monte Amazónico office for the necessary registrations. If you have large suitcases, we suggest repacking and taking only what is necessary. Transfer by land (4X4) to our destination for approximately 2 hours until we reach the shores of the Tambopata River. From there, we will take a boat to the "Monte Amazónico - Tambopata" Lodge. Welcome and room assignment, followed by lunch. In the afternoon, we will take an introductory walk in the tropical rainforest, where we will have the opportunity to see animals in their natural habitat, such as amphibians, mammals, reptiles, and wonderful insects, among others.

We wake up early at 4:30 am to head towards the largest macaw clay lick in the world, the CHUNCHO CLAY LICK, a trip of approximately 1.5 hours by boat. On the way, we will have the incredible opportunity to see some species like capybaras, the largest rodents in the world, tapirs, and possibly the most beautiful South American feline, the jaguar. Many of our clients have photographic evidence of encounters with these beautiful mammals. Once we arrive at the Macaw Clay Lick, we will see hundreds of parrots of different species that come to eat the clay from the wall adjacent to the river. We will settle into our seats to wait for one of the most beautiful natural birdwatching spectacles in the world to begin. Parrots are followed by the three most colorful macaw species in America: the red and green macaws, and the blue and yellow macaws, which gather to eat the clay necessary in their daily diet to eliminate toxins. On a good activity day, you will see hundreds of these wonderful animals flying above you. An experience of a lifetime. After a good breakfast, our boat will take us back to Puerto Maldonado and transfer for 1 hour by boat to the lodge and room assignment. After lunch, we will visit the "monkey island," located in front of our Lodge across the Madre de Dios River, where we will find different species such as the family of capuchin monkeys and squirrel monkeys that live on the island. We will return to the Lodge. At night, we will search for white caimans that are usually found on sandbanks in the Madre de Dios River, for which a flashlight will be necessary. We might also see the capybara, the largest rodent in the world, which can weigh up to 60 kg. Return to the lodge, dinner, and rest.

After breakfast, we will walk 3 km through the dense tropical rainforest towards Sandoval Lake (habitat of piranhas), one of the largest lakes in the Tambopata National Reserve. We will paddle by boat to appreciate a variety of birds and monkeys of different species, such as the hoatzin, cormorant, jacanas, heron, vultures, howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, black-capped capuchin monkeys, marmosets, and sloths. We may have an encounter with the family of giant otters (almost 2 meters long), which are endangered, and the largest recorded caimans over 4 meters long. Return to the Lodge to enjoy a typical lunch. In the evening, we will have a walk to appreciate the diversity of insect species, amphibians, reptiles, and other nocturnal animals. Dinner and rest.

At 5:30 am, we will take a short walk along the Canopy Walkway, about 30 meters high, allowing us to appreciate nature from the highest point possible and have a panoramic view of the Madre de Dios River. From the platforms, we will observe different bird species, such as toucans, macaws, and tanagers. It will be a wonderful experience. Breakfast and return to the city, transfer to the airport or bus station.
